Penn's Formal Request

I obtained a copy of BJ Penn's formal request to the Nevada State Athletic Commission and it includes some interesting language. I've typed up the essential parts, but if anyone wants to read the entire thing, email me. The last line is very dramatic. I bet BJ read their first draft and said, "Oh hey, one more thing to add, hey."

"While this letter is not a formal Complaint to the Nevada Athletic Commission, it shall serve as a formal request to the Commission that it engage in a comprehensive investigation and review of the activities involving and relating to Georges St-Pierre prior to and during the Bout."

"In order for Mr. Penn (or any other licensed fighter of the Nevada Athletic Commission) to properly execute Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu or many other grappling techniques which are an essential part of MMA, it is necessary that an environment exists without any illegally applied lubricants, oils, or other substances that cause or result in slippery surfaces on the combatants."

"Simply put, by lubricating GSP's body a highly slippery surface was created that completely neutralized an innocent participant's abilities and strategy to the advantage of GSP. Mr. Penn's most critical offensive and defensive strategies, his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, were rendered useless as he was unable to effectively control GSP and engage his submission techniques due to Mr. Penn's legs and arms slipping out of the attempted holds/locks and GSP's ability to readily slip out of the holds/locks due to the highly slippery surfaces on GSP's body."

"This illegal situation made it impossible for Mr. Penn to defend himself and unfairly exposed Mr. Penn to GSP's "ground and pound" strategy, which Mr. Penn extensively trained for and was fully prepared to perform against. More importantly, by neutralizing Mr. Penn's Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu through the use of illegal and improper means, Mr. Penn was subjected to a life threatening and career ending environment; an environment that the Commission was formed to protect against."

"Because of Mr. Penn's prior experience and information provided to him before his participation in the Bout, a member of Mr. Penn's team informed Commission members prior to the Bout of the possibility of GSP being "greased up" during the Bout or engaging in activities that may cause him to be/become slippery during the Bout. While this discussion occurred, Mr. Penn and his team believed that the Commission would be on heightened alert to guard against such illegal activities and would take every precaution to ensure Mr. Penn's safety and a proper and fair contest. Additionally, during the Bout, statements were made that GSP was "too slippery" and that Mr. Penn could not grab or hold GSP because of "how slippery" he was during the Bout."

"In closing, all Mr. Penn wanted to have on January 31 is a fair and just bout and he continues to seek a fair and just encounter against Georges St-Pierre."

To avoid a life threatening and career ending environment, you should do some sit-ups. Bruce Lee said unless you train your abs, dough boy, you shouldn't be doing any real sparing, because it may put you in a life threatening and career ending environment. And no, you can't get another payday like this one. Your 20 minutes of fame at 170 are over.

Penn's sour grapes are pathetic. He lost fair and square. GSP could beat him any time any where. Penn is whiner and a complete suck. I feel sorry for him.

Vaseline on anywhere but the face is against the rules.

Why are people ignoring this?

Its wrong and needs to be addressed.

If any true fan of MMA truly did watch the fight and see for themselves what the hell was really going on and seen how easily BJ's legs and arms slipped off GSP....and also saw how GSP's cornermen were fuckin' putting vaseline on his face and then rubbing it on his back....then you would really think and understand where BJ and the rest of his camp is coming from.....all you fuckin haters should just shut the fuck up and open your eyes and see how fuckin wrong and unjust this whole situation is...everyone knows BJ is a jits guy and is very talented in his trade of brazilian jiu-jitsu and if you are a true MMA fan and do your research on how the fighters execute their key game....and then watch that fight...then you should have realized that something was wrong with that fight....BJ if you ever read this...the you know the your fans and the people of Hawaii support you and have your back regardless the outcome of the fight you are a true hawaiian warrior.

True fans have seen this fight. I train in MMA, and I would know better than most that yes, a slippery surface can create "opportunities", but if YOU DID see the fight, then you would have seen that the commission WASHED OFF the vaseline before GSP got back into the round. Besides, there were amazing controls on GSP's part, he kept Penn in a position so that whether or not there was vaseline on his back or his whole body, he dominated over him.

Face it guys, GSP just prepared for this one maybe a bit better than Penn did.

He lost fair and square? you kidding me? Ok he lost, but seriously cheating is cheating whether they meant it or not. Thats the whole reason there is an athletic commission. I am a GSP fan and yes in my eyes he would have still won but Vaseline on the body is Vaseline. Small spots or not which they aren't they still made a difference. I don't know why you guys think BJ is whining, put yourself in his position.

They never "washed off" his body. Prior to the third is the first time they used a towel. Vaseline is tough to towel off when its been on for awhile and mixed with sweat.

Hey, I'm a BJ Penn fan. I was totally rooting for him, but I gotta say that he got his ass handed to him by GSP. I do think that the vaseline played a small role in the fight though. At one point in the fight BJ had GSP in Rubber Guard and then slipped in the Triangle Choke. I jumped up in excitement when I saw it, but GSP slipped his body right out of with ease. BJ might have been able to end the fight there, but I don't think so. GSP is too damn talented.

does anyone think that maybe GSP is just a sweaty french canadian like most are, because from the video it doesn't look like very much vasoline was put on his back and shoulders, if any.

Go back and watch the tape. After round one the cornerman did some silly witch doctor routine where he touched GSP on the shoulders and back. In no way was he being rubbed down. The commission was alerted after that round, told the corner not to touch him again, and used a towel to dry off GSP after round 2. It was a mistake by the corner but in no way led to any advantage by GSP. Sweat works pretty well as a lubricant anyway.

1. I am a GSP fan
2. I deeply respect BJ Penn's talent/skills - he's a Champion and the loss against GSP does not deter from this fact.
3. Facts are facts: Vaseline on any part of the body other than the face is illegal.
4. Consider: If the tapping on the back and chest of GSP is reviewed, the amount of Vaseline that rubbed off on BJ Penn would have been no more than if GSP tucked his freshly greased face (inbetween round) on to BJ Penn's chest/hands/legs.
5. Reference above (4), this incident did not contribute to the BJ loss. GSP won fair and square. The misuse of Vaseline is a non-factor and cannot be blamed for anyone's loss/win.

No matter what, Vaseline or not, GSP won the fight hands down.
During the time in the corners, u think the one thing goin on in GSP's mind is that someone massaging him and has a little dabble of Vaseline on his hands is rubbin a bit of it on his back and shoulders?? NO
hes obviously thinking about the fight and what to work on and tryin to listen to the people giving him advice and helping him. Nothing is GSP's fault at all.

Also, the amount of Vaseline they put on his back, if any at all, is fuckin nothing and would not make him slippery at all. if anything it was the all the sweat from the past rounds on GSP's body from kickin BJ Penns ass so much.

Penn is an ass and deserves what he got. Who cares even if GSPs guy did cheat which he didn't cheated Penn desrved what he got. He's just sulking and sucking.

I'm a GSP fan from Canada and although I think GSP would have won either way, in the second round I did see BJ's legs slip while he was on his back trying to guard and he's damn good when on his back guarding. I'm not a big fan of BJ because he doesnt show class like GSP does but I do admire his JiuJitsu and seen some incredible submissions that completely amaze me on how BJ was able to do that.

As much as I love the idea that GSP won, it does leave me with doubts. Doubts that although I honestly think it was not his intention, did leave GSP with a slight advantage. I still think he would have won the fight but as a big fan of any hand to hand combat sports, it does leave you wondering "what if".

I do think that if they fight again GSP would win and I hope BJ puts up a better fight but as I said no fan of hand to hand combat sports like watching any competition that leaves questions as to the fairness of the fight even though their fighter won.

BJ should dry his eyes and go home. He lost fair and square. He is crap compared to GSP. Why doesn't he just admit it and act like a man!

What GSP did was not illegal under Nevada Commission rules. Their rules state "the excessive use of grease or any other foreign substance may not be used on the face or body of an unarmed combatant. It is illegal "to grease" under UFC rules but Dana has stated that it is a non issue and the cornerman should be dealt with. Get over it BJ!

People, People.... This is such bullshit! GSP is a better fighter. Secretly everyone knows this. First fight.... GSP won with a double vision due to an eye poke, imagine what would have happened if he did not suffer from an eye poke. Second fight.... what a dominant performance, BJ lost in EVERY aspect of the fight. Why was BJ not able to use his legs properly is his guard? Simple, watch the fight again and you will see that GSP postures up every time BJ tries to hook his legs. Vaseline or not, that is skill and preparation. BJ is not a man, he is a big, spoiled baby that will never accept his weakness, in his mind, he has none. I lost all respect for BJ, he should not even be talked about as a hall of famer. A great fighter is not only someone that can win, but all and above, a great man and a humble one. Look at Randy, Forest, GSP, Rich, all of them are great fighters and current of future hall of famers due to their ability to win and lose with their heads held high. That is a making of great champ. BJ is none of those. His plan to retire did not work out as planned and thus he is simply consoling himself. He is a loser, a winner, and a fucking asshole for making probably the biggest UFC fight to date, a fiasco. As for the Vaseline, at has been said over and over that a minuscule amount was transferred but wiped off, making it a non factor. BJ says in his complaint that Vaseline rendered his BJJ useless, WOW, he just completely diminished BJJK and his own skills. Do people really believe that Vaseline can render BJJ useless, tell that to the Gracie family, their legacy was tarnished by BJ. Anybody with a touch of Vaseline can kick BJ's ass since he is BJJ is useless. That says a great deal about his skills. And for those who still think this was intentional, read this http://www.yardbarker.com/mma/articles/GSP_did_not_break_the_rules_Everyone_Read/500654 . The fight was in Nevada and rules are clear. GSD did not break any rules even if the Vaseline was intentional. BJ is you read this, I hope you will be remembered for this fight and nothing else, you don deserve to be in the champs league of Randy, GSP and Rich.
