The UFC will hold a conference call today at 3pm ET to announce the return of Randy Couture. The reported deal will be for three fights, starting with a main event against Brock Lesnar on November 15 at UFC 91 in Portland, OR. As I reported previously, the final two fights could see Couture fight some of the biggest names in MMA with possible bouts against Fedor Emelianenko, Chuck Liddell, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, or Frank Mir.
Since Couture's first match-up will be with Lesnar, it is likely he will be stripped of the UFC Heavyweight Title as part of the new deal. If he was not, his first bout would be with Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, who is the Interim Heavyweight Champion. The UFC could make a special case in this situation, but in doing so would devalue Nogueira's championship status. It just makes sense to strip Couture of the title.
