Dana White has confirmed the rumors - Randy "The Natural" Couture is returning to the UFC and will face Brock Lesnar at UFC 91 in Las Vegas, NV. He also explained the winner of Lesnar/Couture will face the winner of Mir/Nogueira in a Heavyweight Title unification bout. He said the unification bout would take place some time in 2009, which leaves open the possibility of a Fedor/Couture match-up being sandwiched in prior to it (obviously, if he beats Lesnar, that is).
The biggest surprise was the UFC chose not to strip Couture of the Heavyweight Title. This means the fight with Lesnar will be five rounds and for the UFC Heavyweight Title. Lesnar showed no signs of tiring in his three rounds against Heath Herring, but a five round battle with Randy Couture is a different animal.
The strangest part of this is if it was not for Cheick Kongo's injury, this fight would have never happened. It is even possible Couture is not lured back. A match-up with Lesnar will make Couture a lot more money than against just about every other opponent. With Mir and Nogueira tied up, there is not another big name fighter for him to face. I find it hard to believe Couture would have been so receptive to a return to action, if the opponent was not a huge draw like Lesnar. "Randy Couture returns to the UFC to face Fabricio Werdum" just doesn't have the same ring to it.
